#1. What does this sign mean?

Deer crossing. The animal pictured on the sign is common in this area. Watch for animals crossing the road particularly during twilight and night-time hours.


#2. This sign means:

No Right Turn. You cannot make a right turn at this intersection. Remember that a red circle with a slash means no. The sign shows you what is not allowed.


#3. This sign means:

Lane drop. Left lane ends, merge right.


#4. This red and white sign means:

Do not enter. The sign marks a one-way roadway with traffic coming against you. You must not enter from the direction you are traveling. Remember, this is a square sign with a white horizontal line inside a red ball. The sign is not circular.


#5. This sign tells you:

This is a regulatory No U-turn sign. It means that you are not allowed to make a U-turn.


#6. This warning sign means:

The sign warns of a school zone or a school crossing. You should be especially watchful for children in these areas. In many school zones, the speed limit is reduced during school hours.


#7. You approach this sign. What should you expect ahead?

Turn sign. There is a sharp turn to the right in the road ahead. You should reduce speed. The turn is too sharp to take at the regular highway speed. The turn sign is used instead of a curve sign where the advisory speed is of 30 mph or less. An advisory speed sign may be attached.


#8. This black and white sign means:

The One Way sign is used in intersections to indicate streets or roadways upon which traffic is allowed to travel in one direction only. Do not turn against the arrow.


#9. What does this road sign mean?

Steep hill ahead. Slow down. To prevent excessive wear on brakes when moving down a long hill or steep grade, use a lower gear instead of the brake pedal to control speed. It is best to shift to the lower gear at the top of the hill before you descend. and be ready to shift to lower gear to control speed and protect brakes from damage.


#10. This sign means:

Merging Traffic sign. You are approaching a point where other traffic lanes come together with your lane. Watch for traffic from that direction.

The Signs Recognition Test

The North Carolina NCDOT driver license test has two parts. Your knowledge about common road rules and North Carolina traffic laws is tested in a 25-question written test. In a second part you are asked to identify common road signs by shape, color, and/or text and symbols.

The signs recognition test has 12 questions and you must correctly identify at least 9 signs. All signs on the test are shown in the North Carolina Driver’s Manual.
